Monika Grzymala- Volumen (2013)

Monika Grzymala,  born in Poland ,works and lives in Germany.

This site-specific work is composed of thousands of sheets of handmade paper, some of them printed with images of autograph manuscripts from the museum’s collections, connected together with bookbinding yarn and suspended from the ceiling of the Morgan’s Gilbert Court. According to the artist, Volumen is a visual celebration of paper as the “pictorial carrier” employed by artists, writers, and composers to express human creativity. The title alludes not only to the large size of the work but also to the word lumen—for the luminous flux of light that changes the work’s appearance throughout the day in the glass-enclosed, 50-foot-high court.
